Printed Ephemera — 1913-12-22
Postcard, photographic postcard
Postcard depicting Suffragettes standing in the doorway of a WSPU branch shop and committee rooms. One of the women is Vera Holme, dressed in her WSPU chauffeur's uniform. In the foreground is a horse and carriage carrying Emmeline Pankhurst and another Suffragette. It is likely the image was taken in South Lanarkshire during campaiging for the by-election where the WSPU urged voters to vote against the Liberal candidate. The by-election held on 12th December 1913 was won by the Unionist candidate.
Handwritten on the back is the message 'With best wishes from N. L. S.'. The card is addressed to Isabel Seymour, Okangan Gate Ranch, Enderby, British Columbia. Previously a salaried officer at WSPU Headquarters, including Prisoners' Secretary from 1909, Isabel Seymour moved to Canada in 1913. She returned to the UK in 1920 on the death of the friend with whom she was living.
