Women's Tax Resistance League, Mrs Kineton Parkes
Postcard with photograph captioned 'Women's Tax Resistance League. Mrs Kineton Parkes. Mass meeting, Hyde Park Sunday July 14th, 1912'. This demonstration, which took place on Bastille Day, was organised by suffragettes Sylvia Pankhurst and Flora Drummond, and was attended by a number of suffrage organisations and the Independent Labour Party.
Margaret Anne Kineton Parkes (c.1865-1920) was a member of suffrage organisation the Women's Freedom League, and became secretary of the Tax Resistance League in 1909. The TRL conducted a campaign of organised resistance to taxation, arguing that women should not have to pay tax until they were given the vote and could have a say in how the taxes were spent.
