Mrs Pankhurst
Postcard with portrait of Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928) seated by the photographer Lena Connell. Lena Connell was a portrait photographer and also a member of the Hampstead Branch of the Women's Social and Political Union.
Emmeline Pankhurst was born in Manchester into a Radical political family. In 1903 she founded the Women's Social and Political Union with the motto 'Deeds not Words'. Emmeline Pankhurst was a charismatic leader who converted many to her cause. Led by Emmeline and her daughter Christabel, the WSPU adopted increasingly militant tactics, such as heckling politicians and smashing windows. Emmeline Pankhurst served a number of prison sentences for her suffragette activities and joined fellow Suffragette prisoners onon hunger and thirst strike.
