Printed Ephemera — 1910-1914
Postcard, photographic postcard
Postcard with photographic portrait of Christabel Pankhurst in academic robes holding her diploma. Beneath is printed ' © Underwood & Underwood Studios, New York'. Postcards like these with portraits of suffragettes were produced as part of the female suffrage campaign and sold in Women's Social and Political Union shops to raise money for the cause.
Christabel Pankhurst had a first class degree in law, but as a woman was unable to practise as a lawyer. Instead she became Organizing Secretary of the WSPU, the suffrage organisation founded in 1903 by her mother Emmeline Pankhurst. The two women led the WSPU, using militant tactics, such as heckling politicians and smashing windows, to campaign for female enfranchisement and to gain publicity for their cause. Christabel’s talent for public speaking gained them many supporters. She was imprisoned several times for her suffragette activities.
