Funeral at Morpeth of Miss E. W. Davison
Postcard with photograph captioned 'Funeral at Morpeth of Miss E W Davison'. Emily Wilding Davison was a member of militant suffragette organisation the Women's Social and Political Union. During the 1913 Derby she ran out onto the racetrack in an attempt to stop the King's horse. Davison received serious head injuries and died 4 days later. The WSPU organised a spectacular funeral procession, with many of the attendees dressed in white, purple and green, the organisation's colours. A service was held for Davison at St. George's Church in Bloomsbury and her body was then transported to her home town of Morpeth for burial.
