Printed Ephemera — 1911-06-17
Suffragette poster parade
The young girls depicted in this image were taking part in the Coronation Procession of 1911 as part of the Votes for Women newspaper contingent. They appear to be under the age of 16 which implies they are the daughters of active Suffragette campaigners.
The postcard was one in a series printed as a visual record of the spectacular Coronation Procession. The printer H Searjeant, also listed in directories as a stationer and bookbinder based in Ladbroke Grove, regularly printed postcards of WSPU events. It is likely he was also the photographer of these images and had an official arrangement with the organisation to record events and print glass negatives as postcards for sale benefiting both his own business and the campaign 'war chest'.
The weekly published Votes for Women newspaper provided the Women's Social & Political with a regular and significant income stream. As the official voice of the campaign, it was also the key source of information for Suffragettes throughout the country.
