Postcard, photographic postcard
Suffragette procession in support of the Conciliation Bill, 18th June 1910. In the centre of the image can be seen the contingent of female arts graduates in their academic robes. At the head of the procession is their 'Arts' banner. Printed on the back of the card, together with the printer's address, is '(copyright) June 18th, 1910'.
This event , referred to as the Prison to Citizenship procession, was organised jointly by the Women's Social and Political Union and the Women's Freedom League to encourage MPs to vote in favour of the Conciliation Bill being debated in Parliament that would have given some women the vote. Up to 15,000 women marched from the Embankment to the Albert Hall to hear speeches from suffragette leaders including Christabel Pankhurst.
The postcard was one in a series of 8 issued by the commercial photographer H.Searjeant for the 18th June procession. The postcards could be purchased individually for 2d or sold wholesale to WSPU branch shops.
