John Coakley Lettesom, M. D.
Dr. John Coakley Lettsome (1744–1815) was an English physician and philanthropist born on Little Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands. He was born a Quaker and became a supportrer of the abolition of slavery. He is also known as Lettsom, particularly when he resided in the British Virgin Islands.
Dr. Lettsome founded the Medical Society of London in 1773 which is situated at the heart of London's medical community at Lettsome House, Chandos Street, near Cavendish Square. It is the oldest medical society in the United Kingdom. He also founded the General Dispensary, the Royal Humane Society as well as supporting numerous charitable concerns. he lived in Grove Hill Camberwell.
