Elaine Inescort (d. 1964) was born Charlotte Elizabeth Ihle in London. She was a linguist and actress, appearing on stage and in several films. Her daughter was the actress Frieda Inescort. Joan of Arc became the symbol of suffragette militancy from around 1909, as she was an exemplar of a strong and independent woman who was martyred for her beliefs.
