Amy goes to Switzerland on 12 Aug. Any time after that I will come when it suits you. Much love L.H. xx'. It is addressed to Myra Sadd Brown, a fellow suffragette.
Lilian Hicks (1853-1924) worked for the suffrage cause from the 1880s. She and her daughter Amy joined the Women's Social and Political Union in 1906, and the Women's Freedom League in 1907. From 1911-13 Hicks was honorary secretary of the Hampstead branch of the WSPU. In 1913 she became honorary treasurer of the Tax Resistance League and London organiser for the Northern Men's Federation For Women's Suffrage.
The photograph was taken by Lena Connell, a portrait photographer who was a member of the Hampstead Branch of the WSPU.
