Printed Ephemera — 1906-1908
Votes For Women, Miss Helen Fraser
Postcard with photographic portrait of Helen Fraser (1881-c. 1964). Beneath is printed 'Miss Helen Fraser Organiser of the Women's Social and Political Union' followed by the address of the organisation.
Fraser was born in Yorkshire to Scottish parents. She joined the WSPU in 1906 and became an organiser in Scotland. She worked on the WSPU campaign at the Aberdeen South by-election, helping to reduce the Liberal majority to a tenth of what it had been. In 1908 she left the WSPU in disagreement with militant actions such as window breaking. She was headhunted by the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies and worked as a member of its executive committee for 14 years. She later became the first woman to be a parliamentary candidate in Scotland.
