Printed Ephemera — 1920-1929
Cutting, book cutting
Page from a book, with an illustration of Mrs Margaret Cousins, B. Mus. On the back are portraits of three Indian women who have achieved political or professional positions.
Margaret Cousins was a social reformer and women’s activist born in Ireland. She was awarded a degree after studying at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. After her marriage, she became interested in vegetarianism and women’s suffrage. In 1908, together with Francis and Hannah Sheehy Skeffington, Cousins founded the militant Irish Women's Franchise League. Cousins was also interested in the occult and in theosophy. She moved with her husband to India, where she campaigned for women’s suffrage for Indian women and for improvements in their material circumstances and education. Cousins remained involved with theosophy. She was imprisoned twice for acting on her beliefs, once as a suffragette.
