Postcard portrait of Violet Anne Bland, Suffragette prisoner. On the back is written 'Violet Anne Bland Henley Grove Bristol till 1910 afterwards 22 Old Burlington Street London W1. Prisoner Aylesbury, 1912.' Bland owned and ran a college in Bristol called Henley Grove, where she provided paid hospitality for Women's Social and Political Union members. She was herself a member of the WSPU. In 1910 she moved to London where she ran a guest house in the West End. She was arrested on 'Black Friday' in November 1910. Later she was imprisoned for breaking a window, and during her imprisonment at Aylesbury went on hunger strike and was force fed.
