Printed Ephemera — 1909-1912
Laura Ainsworth, Suffragette and Holloway Prisoner
Portrait of Laura Ainsworth, Suffragette and Holloway Prisoner.
Laura is depicted in this portrait wearing her silver Holloway brooch and hunger strike medal with an enamel band representing a period of force-feeding.
Ainsworth gave up teaching to become a salaried organiser for the Women’s Social and Political Union. She worked for the WSPU in London and Birmingham and was one of the first suffragettes to go on hunger strike while in prison and to suffer force feeding. When the leadership of the WSPU split in 1912, Ainsworth resigned. She became honorary secretary of the north-eastern branch of the National Political League, which campaigned for social and political reforms, including women’s suffrage.
