Printed Ephemera — 1905-1940
Postcard, portrait postcard
Postcard with photographic portrait of Mrs.Annie Besant, with a citation from 'What Theosophy is'. The postcard is addressed to a Miss Rae of 13 Victoria Road and reads 'With love and all Good Wishes for now and eternity'.
Annie Besant separated from her husband in 1874 and moved to London to speak in public and to write articles in favour of freethought for journals such as the ‘National Reformer’. She was involved in writing two pamphlets on birth control, the first of which was condemned in court for depraving public morals. In 1885 Besant became a member of the Fabian Society executive. She joined the Law and Liberty League and edited its journal ‘The Link’, which carried the first article about the match-girls, employees of Bryant and May, who were on strike to improve their working conditions and salary. Besant helped the match-girls to form the first solely female union. She later joined the Theosophical Society, and worked on its behalf in India, where she became president of the society. She also campaigned for the right of Indians to self-government.
