Printed Ephemera — 1795-01-20
Trade card, invoice
Engraved trade card in the form of an advertising flyer with a handwritten invoice. Issued by H.L. Gould, wine and spirit merchant from her wine and brandy warehouse at the sign of the 'Two Spies', Catherine street, in the Strand. The flyer includes an engraving of the tradesman's sign depicting 'Two spies' carrying a 'cluster' of grapes and printed details of wine and spirits imported and supplied by the firm including Jamaica rum, French brandy & Holland Geneva and a range of British made wines including Cowslip, Elder and Raspberry. It also claims to despatch goods 'all over the country' from its London warehouse. Such businesses represented London's role as 'warehouse of the world'. H.L. Gould appears to have taken over the business of Gould & Squire, located at the same address sometime between 1784 and 1795. It is likely she was either the widow or daughter of the original owner.
