Printed Ephemera — 1905-1914
Photograph of Suffragette Nellie Hall
Nellie Hall was involved with the Suffragette movement from a young age as her Mother Martha had been a founder member of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1903. In 1913 after working voluntarily in the Birmingham offices of the WSPU Nellie was arrested for throwing a brick through the window of Prime Minister Herbert Asquith’s car and for involvement in an arson attack. She served 8 days of a 3 week sentence before being released under the Cat and Mouse Act. She was rearrested with her Mother and Sister in 1914 on the day of the WSPU deputation to the King at Buckingham Palace. She went on hunger strike again and this time was forcibly fed.
