Photograph of Suffragette Mabel Capper
Mabel Capper became a member of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1907. She worked as an Organiser in Manchester and six sentences in Holloway and Winson Green prisons between 1909 and 1912. She took part in protests outside the House of Commons and interrupted meetings being held by the Prime Minister and other officials. Whilst in prison she went on hunger strike and was forcibly fed by the authorities. She complained to the press about being fed through a tube and of the use on her of a stomach pump.
