Printed Ephemera — 1905-1914
Photograph of Suffragette Anne Cobden Sanderson
Anne Cobden-Sanderson was the wife of publisher Thomas Sanderson (who founded theDoves Press). In 1906 she was served time in Holloway prison for obstructing the police in the execution of their duty. She was classified as a ‘second class’ prisoner rather than the usual first division where as a political prisoner she would have enjoyed certain rights such as having books in her cell, the ability to receive letters, her own furniture and furnishings and the right to wear her own clothes. She was disturbed by the harsh treatment that she and fellow suffragettes received and campaigned for improved conditions.
