Trade card, invoice
Copper-engraved trade card with handwritten invoice issued by the haberdashery firm of James Butler located at the sign of the Golden Ball in Pall Mall. The trade card includes an engraving of the tradesman's sign of a golden ball enclosed within an octagonal cartouche flanked by floral garlands. Below is printed a full list of the goods supplied by the firm both wholesale and retail including gauzes, ribbons, gloves, silk purses, stockings, India and English fans and silk twist for stays. The handwritten invoice on the reverse of the trade card refers to the supply of a number of goods including India cotton and canvas. James's son Charles, born in 1750 became a notable Catholic legal writer.
