Sam Hoggins
Copper-engraved billhead and handwritten invoice issued by Samuel Hoggins, tallow chandler located 'facing' Cecil Street in the Strand. Dated April-June 1757 the invoice refers to supply of candles to a Mr Hoskins. Tallow candles were the cheapest and commonest form of domestic candle in the mid 18th century. With the arrival of brighter and less foul smelling spermaceti candles, in the late 18th century, however, they gradually fell out of favour.
