The Dancing Lesson
This Chelsea figure group known as 'The Dancing Lesson' was adapted from a painting by Boucher, which was engraved by Carle van Loo. A young man sits on the right playing a hurdy- gurdy. His female companion helps a small dog dressed in a jacket and trousers to stand upright and dance on top of a marble plinth.
This figure group was one of the largest and most complex ever produced by the Chelsea porcelain factory. The bocage behind the figures is in the form of a flowering tree. Only one other example is known to have been made.
