Social History — Early 18th century
Pap boat
This plain pewter pap boat is scratched with the date '1791' on the base, although it is earlier in date. It is also stamped with the letter 'X' and other letters 'B', 'O', 'and 'B' over 'I', and 'O', 'I', but it has no maker's marks. It was designed for feeding children or invalids, with a bowl for holding food or liquids and a spout which makes it easy to direct these into the recipient's mouth. Pap was a soft mixture of breadcrumbs moistened with water or milk, sometimes with beer added.
