The Oak
Isabel Barrat issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Oak, in Great Turnstile, Holborn, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 3261; Obv inscription: ISBELL. BARRAT. AT. YE. OK. IN. GRT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = An oak tree and I.B (initials either side of sign, in field); Rev inscription: IN.TVRN.STILE.IN.HOLBOVRNE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HER / HALFE / PENNY / 1664 (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Great Turnstile, lay between High Holborn and Little Queen Street (now part of the Kingsway), in Holborn, Middlesex; the area is now part of the London Borough of Camden.
