His Excellency the Persian Ambassador
An image from an extra-illustrated volume of Jacob Larwood's book 'The story of London parks'. This portrait of Mirza Abul Hassan Khan, the Persian Ambassador, shows him in Persian costume on a white horse. Although it is captioned with the date 1819, Khan in fact visited London in May 1809 and remained there until the following April. Khan caused a stir by bringing with him a Circassian slave renowned for her beauty, whom only a select few people were allowed to see. The Persian ambassador was also ‘said to be a great admirer of our English ladies’.
