John Evelyn's plan for rebuilding the City of London after the Great Fire in 1666. Evelyn had complained about London’s ‘narrow and incommodious’ streets for years. He showed his plan to the king on 13 September and claimed it would make London ‘fitter for commerce, apter for government, sweeter for health and more glorious for beauty’. His plan included long, straight streets and large squares. This is a later print of Evelyn's plan, printed in 1776 for Walter Harrison's 'A New and Universal History, Description and Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster, The Borough of Southwark etc.'
