Printed Ephemera — 1905
Celebration of the Anniversary of the Whitehall Conference 1655-1905
The Jewish Historical Society of England published this booklet in 1905 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Whitehall Conference. The conference, held in 1655, responded favourably to Menasseh ben Israel’s petition to Oliver Cromwell to readmit Jewish people to England. The Jewish Historical Society of England was founded in 1893 at a time of high level Jewish migration from Eastern Europe to London. Publications like this booklet attempted to offset prejudice against Jewish people and to emphasise the long history of successful Jewish integration into British society.
