Goldsmiths Hall
A menu, a plan of tables and a programme referring to a Banquet of a Tryal of the Pyx, held at Goldsmiths' Hall on 8 May 1912.
The menu details seven courses; 'Potages', 'Poissons', 'Entrees', 'Releves', 'Rots', 'Entremets', 'Releves' which include dishes such as 'Cailles on Caisses', 'Filets de Caneton a la Casselane' and 'Supreme de Saumon Beaupre'.
The Trial of the Pyx is an annual event with medieval roots and which was formally laid down in the 1870 Coinage Act. It is held at the Hall of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths to ensure that the Royal Mint has produced coins which fall within the statutory limits for metallic composition, weight and size. The Pyx refers to the chest in which the coins are carried to the trial; during the year one coin is randomly removed from each batch of each denomination struck, put into a sealed bag containing a total of 50 coins and this bag put into the Pyx box until the time of the trial.
