Printed Ephemera — 1921-1929
Letterhead
This Marks and Spencer letter headed paper names the company Director as Simon Marks and Israel Sieff as Chairman and Managing Director. Simon was the son of Michael Marks, a Russian-born Jewish refugee who formed a partnership in 1894 with a cashier named Tom Spencer. Their penny bazaar market stalls were the foundation for a highly successful business. Israel Sieff and Simon Marks attended the same school and each married the other's sister. Together they made Marks and Spencer into a renowned chain store.
