The Cordwainers' Arms
John Kemp issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Puttney and Bettersea, Surrey.
Boyne & Williamson (1891) reference Surrey number 10; Obv inscription: IOHN.KEMP.IN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Cordwainers' arms (in field); Rev inscription: PVTNEY.OR.BATERSEY (around field, in Roman capitals) = I.B.K. / 1663 (triad of initials in Roman capitals with date below, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful company of Cordwainers are: Azure a chevron or between three goats' heads erased argent horned and bearded (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960).See also, A14970, in the museum collection. The parishes of Putney and Battersea, were formerly part of Surrey, they now lie in the London Borough of Wandsworth.
