Photography — 1903-1910
Longridge Road, S.W.
Longridge Road in Earl's Court. A girl wearing a hat can be seen in the right foreground. The horse drawn cart travelling down the street says 'Peter Robinson' on the back. Peter Robinson was a large store on Oxford Street which began as a linen draper's and expanded to include departments such as dressmaking and lace.
Broom demonstrates here her interest in the inclusion of people and everyday activity in order to bring the image to life. She produced a series of street views to sell as picture postcards; the popular format being her primary commercial output.
Christina Broom, trading as Mrs Albert Broom, was a pioneering professional photographer and is considered to be the UK's first woman press photographer. Broom's extensive photographic work spans the activities of the suffrage movement in London, street views, military figures and actions of the Household Division including the First World War period, sporting events and the Royal Family.
