Earl's Court Exhibition - The Indian Village
Entrepreneur Imre Kiralfy rebuilt the Earl's Court exhibition grounds as a small-scale version of Chicago's White City in 1893. They consisted of palatial exhibition halls in a Mogul Indian style and an amusement park. Villages, buildings and scenery representing foreign lands were standard features of the exhibitions held there. ‘Natives', such as these Mohawk Indians from the village of Kahnawake, near Montreal, were brought over to England to demonstrate their way of life.
Christina Broom, trading as Mrs Albert Broom, was a pioneering professional photographer and is considered to be the UK's first woman press photographer. She produced a series of street views and newsworthy events to sell as picture postcards; the popular format being her primary commercial output.
Broom's extensive photographic work spans the activities of the suffrage movement in London, street views, military figures and actions of the Household Division including the First World War period, sporting events and the Royal Family.
