Markham Square, Chelsea
Markham Square is off the King's Road in Chelsea. In the centre are communal gardens shared by the residents of the square. Houses on either side of the square in this image carry 'To Let' signs. At the far end, Chelsea Congregational Church is visible. This church was built in 1858-9 and demolished in 1953, to be replaced by housing.
Christina Broom was a professional photographer who produced a series of London street views for sale as postcards. She later photographed the activities of the suffrage movement in London and is considered one of the earliest female press photographers.
