Printed Ephemera — 1906
A suffragette refusing to pay tax
A photograph described on the reverse as 'Miss Ball resists at Ilfracombe'. 'Miss Ball' stands before a table of cutlery and plate with a poster declaring 'No Vote No Tax,' the motto of the Tax Resistance League. It is probable Miss Ball was a member of the TRL and had refused to pay taxes in protest against women not having the right to vote and thereby influence how their taxes are spent. Members of the TRL risked having valuable possessions seized in lieu of taxes owed and the items on the table are presumably from Miss Ball's home and about to be seized by the tax office. Seized goods were usually sold at public auction and bought back by fellow Suffragettes who returned them to their owner only for them to be seized the following year.
