Printed Ephemera — 1821-1822
Manuscript
This bill of mortality is printed with a list all the christenings and burials that occured in London from 11 December 1821 to 10 December 1822. Burials and christenings are listed by parishes both within and outside the city walls, Westminster, and in the out-parishes of Middlesex and Surrey. In total 23373 christenings were registered for that year with 18865 deaths. Also listed are the causes of death and the age group of those who died.
The bill records the greatest cause of death to be consumption with 3608 victims. The next highest cause of death was described as 'convulsions' with 2929 victims. The bill also notes that 4 Londoners were murdered that year, 3 were poisoned, 1 was strangled, 33 committed suicide and 113 drowned. With regards ages the greatest number of those who died (4605) were under two years of age. But quite a number of Londoners appear to have lived a fairly long life, with 2601 having been registered as dying of old age and one even dying at the age of a hundred and one.
