Wargrave Church after the fire of 1914
Postcard with photograph captioned 'Wargrave Church after the fire 1/6/1914'. A crowd has gathered outside the church.
Wargrave Church in Reading was set on fire during the early hours of 1 June 1914. The blaze destroyed the roof, windows and bells. Postcards with messages from suffragettes were found at the scene.
From 1913 members of militant suffragette groups such as the Women’s Social and Political Union undertook increasingly violent activities, such as arson and the destruction of public artworks. However, World War I put an end to the militant suffragette campaign.
