Portrait of Suffragette Edith How-Martyn, 1936
Editth How Martyn was one of the first women to serve time in prison for the Suffragette cause. In 1906 she gave up a position as Professor in Mathematics in 1906 to concentrate on the campaign and became honorary Secretary of the Women’s Social and Political Union. In 1907 Charlotte Despard broke away from the union finding it undemocratic and instead established the Women’s Freedom League. How Martyn became the first Secretary of the League. In 1918 she founded the Suffragette Fellowship and in 1919 became the first female member of the Middlesex Council. She emigrated to Australia with her husband at the outbreak of the Second World War.
