Suffragette Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy
Photograph of Elizabeth Wolstenholme-Elmy wearing a cameo and a badge which reads 'Votes For Women'. On the back is typed 'Mrs Wolstenholm. Elmy'. Beneath is some German handwritten in pencil.
Elizabeth Clarke Wolstenholme-Elmy (1833-1918) was a campaigner for women's rights born near Manchester. She promoted education for women and the right of married women to own property. From the mid 1860s, she was involved in working for women's suffrage. Wolstenholme-Elmy was subject to public disapproval for having a relationship with her partner, Ben Elmy, and becoming pregnant, before marrying him. She was one of the WSPU's earliest supporters, joining its national committee. At the age of 75, Wolstenholme Elmy was among the leaders of the WSPU's procession to Hyde Park on 'Women's Sunday' in June 1908.
