Emmeline Pankhurst leaving Waterloo railway station for Southampton Docks, 4th October 1911. The image depicts Emmeline setting off for a a lecture tour of the United States and Canada. A group of Suffragettes gathered to say farewell to Emmeline, who was accompanied on her trip by Miss Pethick, the sister of Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence. Votes for Women reported that, as the 9.45am train for Southampton departed, it carried, 'floating from the front of its engine' a flag in the purple, white and green colours of the Women's Social and Political Union. On her arrival at Southampton Emmeline was greeted by local Suffragettes and presented with a bouquet in the colours.
