The Fleece
Samuel Jones issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Fleece in Butcher Row (area near The Strand), Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 453; Obv inscription: SAMVELL.IONES.AT.THE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A fleece S.A.I. (triad of initials in Roman capitals with sign above, in field); Rev inscription: IN.YE.BVCHER.ROW.TEM.BAR (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Butcher Row was formerly part of Middlesex, and is now part of the City of Westminster.
