Coin, souvenir coin
Cardboard 3d (threepence) coin issued as a souvenir of the accesion to the throne of King Edward VII in 1901. The coin shows the King's head in anticipation of the new coinage to be minted during the reign of the new King. For generations of Londoners only familiar with Queen Victoria's profile on the coinage such a souvenir would have seemed quite a novelty and attracted much attention before the 'real' coins appeared on the street. This souvenir was purchased for one penny (1d) by Ernest King from a London street trader operating in the Ludgate Hill area of London.
