Printed Ephemera — 1914
Suffragette trial, Felixstowe
Photographic postcard depicting a large crowd gathered along the seafront at Felixstowe. Below is printed 'Suffragette Trial, Felixstowe'. The figure emerging from a car may be either the Suffragette Hilda Burkitt or Florence Tunks.
In May 1914 the Suffragettes Hilda Burkitt and Florence Tunks went on trial at the Town Hall on a charge of burning two wheat stacks and setting fire to the pier at Great Yarmouth and the Bath Hotel in Felixstowe. Found guilty of arson Burkitt, who was 37, and Tunks, who was 22, were jailed for two years and nine months. Both were released under the general amnesty of Suffragette prisoners on the outbreak of World War I in August 1914.
