Philip Snowden M.P.
Postcard with photographic portrait captioned 'Philip Snowden M.P'. Snowden (1864-1937) met his wife Ethel through the Independent Labour Party, of which he was chairman. Ethel Snowden was a member of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies and converted her husband to the cause. In 1906 he was elected Labour MP for Blackburn and supported the idea of women having the vote on equal terms to men. In 1913 Snowden became vice-president of the Men's League for Women's Suffrage, founded in 1907 by Herbert Jacobs.
The photograph was taken by Lena Connell, a portrait photographer who was a member of the Hampstead Branch of the WSPU.
