Printed Ephemera — 1914
Postcard, portrait postcards
Postcard with photograph of a woman seated at a desk. A calendar for the year 1914 hangs on the wall. Handwritten on the back of the card is 'Votes For Women. Miss Annie Williams. Organiser W.S.P.U. Died 3 July 1943 aged 84 yrs'.
Annie Williams (1860-1943) joined the Women's Social and Political Union in 1907 and worked for them in Bristol in 1908. In 1909 she gave up her job as a headmistress in Cornwall to become a WSPU organiser in Newcastle, campaigning in the general election. Williams later worked as organiser in Huddersfield and Halifax, and then in Cardiff. She was imprisoned twice, once for taking part in the deputation to the House of Commons on 29 June and once for taking part in the WSPU window smashing campaign of 1912.
It looks as if there is a postcard of Constance Lytton on the wall.
