Printed Ephemera — 1911
Postcard, portrait postcard
Postcard with photographic portrait of Laetitia Withall. Handwritten on the back of the card is 'Leslie Hall. Laetitia Withall. Sentences- (1) Birmingham 1909 (2) Liverpool 1909 (3) Holloway 1913. Hunger strike and forcible feeding. Photo taken 1911'.
Letitia Withall (a variant on the spelling of her first name) was a suffragette who was awarded the Women's Social and Political Union hunger strike medal in 1913. Born in Australia, her family came to live in England when she was aged 8. She joined the Croydon branch of the WSPU. Her medal is now in the collection of medals in the National Library of Australia.
Withall also used the alias Leslie Hall. Some suffragettes used aliases because their families or employers did not approve of their suffragette activities. Others did so to keep the police from discovering their identity.
