Printed Ephemera — 1936
Adela Pankhurst Walsh in 1936
Postcard of Adela Pankhurst Walsh (1885-1961) seated in a garden. Handwritten on the back is 'Adela Pankhurst Walsh 1936'.
In 1906 Adela Pankhurst gave up her teaching job to become a Women's Social and Political Union organizer in Lancashire and Yorkshire. The WSPU was a militant suffrage organisation led by Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst, Adela's mother and sister. Adela served several prison sentences for her suffragette activities. However, her left-wing views brought her into conflict with her mother and Christabel, and when Adela caught pleurisy, they took the opportunity to end her career with the WSPU. In 1912 Adela emigrated to Australia. She remained there for the rest of her life, continuing to campaign on political and social issues. In 1917 she married and had a son and four daughters.
