Printed Ephemera — 1909-1913
Consulting the Oracle
Pro-female suffrage propaganda postcard entitled 'Consulting the Oracle.' Designed by Helen Dorothy Copsey and published by the Suffrage Atelier the postcard depicts women's suffrage as a young child who, despite being fed only on anger, persecution and anger by the anti-suffrage movement continues to grow and flourish.
The artist Helen Dorothy Copsey studied at Regent Street Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art. Primarily a figure and flower painting in watercolour and tempera she produced several designs, including this one for the Suffrage Atelier.
The Suffrage Atelier was founded in London in February 1909. Its aim was: 'to encourage Artists to forward the Women's Movement, and particularly the Enfranchisement of Women, by means of pictorial publications.'
The Atelier artists specialised in hand-made wooden block prints, stencilling and etchings and produced visually powerful posters and postcards to publicise the pro-suffrage campaign.
