Printed Ephemera — 1912
Twentieth Century Robbery!
Black and white pro-female suffrage propaganda postcard depicting the highway robbery of a woman in a sedan chair. Captioned 'Twentieth Century Robbery! Taxes, pay up and shut up' the two robbers represent Prime Minister Asquith and David Lloyd George. Designed by Gladys Letcher for the Suffrage Atelier the postcard brings attention to the 'taxation without representation' argument of the suffrage movement that, whilst many women paid taxes, without the right to vote they had no influence over how those taxes were spent by the government.
The Suffrage Atelier was founded in London in February 1909. Its aim was: 'to encourage Artists to forward the Women's Movement, and particularly the Enfranchisement of Women, by means of pictorial publications.'
The Atelier artists specialised in hand-made wooden block prints, stencilling and etchings and produced visually powerful posters and postcards to publicise the pro-suffrage campaign.
