Printed Ephemera — 1909-1913
The New State Authorities Book
Pro-female suffrage propaganda postcard captioned 'The New State Authorities Book, by Lloyd George.' Published by the Suffrage Atelier the postcard attacks the Chancellor of the Exchequer's financial policies through the depiction of two contrasting classrooms. On the left a female teacher with four girl pupils points to a blackboard calculation that refers to the financial benefit women should receive based on their actual contribution. On the right hand image the Chancellor of the Exchequer stands before a class of four boy pupils pointing to a blackboard calculations that reveals the reality that, despite women contributing more than men they actually receive less than men. The postcard possibly refers to Lloyd George's People's budget of 1909. The unfair financial position of women with regards the law was regularly highlighted by suffrage campaigners to further the 'Votes for Women' argument.
The Suffrage Atelier was founded in London in February 1909. Its aim was: 'to encourage Artists to forward the Women's Movement, and particularly the Enfranchisement of Women, by means of pictorial publications.'
The Atelier artists specialised in hand-made wooden block prints, stencilling and etchings and produced visually powerful posters and postcards to publicise the pro-suffrage campaign.
