No Taxation Without Representation
Pro-female suffrage propaganda postcard bearing the message 'No Taxation Without Representation.' The black and white postcard depicts two anti-suffrage supporters who look in horror at the 'unladylike' suffrage campaigner who stands resolute demanding the vote. The 'No Taxation without Representation' message refers to the argument that women should withdraw payment of their taxes until they achieved the vote. The formation of The Tax Resistance League (TRL) in 1909 resulted in a more organised resistance to taxation. The argument of the League was that, if women were liable to pay tax, they should be given the right to vote in parliamentary elections and influence how those taxes were spent.
Formed in 1907, the Artists' Suffrage League produced posters, postcards and other visual material to promote the Votes for Women message of the non-militant National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies. The Chairman of the Artists' suffrage League was Mary Lowndes who also designed many of the banners used by the NUWSS in processions and demonstrations.
